Obituary for Edith Kennethea Dunn

Edith Kennethea Dunn
(1921 to 2017)
Born Edith Kennethea Brigham in Paisley, Ontario, on October 26th, 1921, Edith passed away peacefully on August 25th, 2017. Growing up in Weston, the youngest of five children of Edith and Charlie Brigham, Edith married her beloved husband of nearly 50 years, the late Edward Maitland Dunn, in 1947, two days after graduating as a Registered Nurse at Toronto Western Hospital. Making Newmarket her home for the past 60 years, she was an inspirational mother to James Philip (Valerie), the late Dr. Stephen Charles Maitland (Dennis), the late Dr. Katherine Anne Greenfield (Jeff (Theresa)), and Andrew William (Christine). Edith was a positive force in the lives of her grandchildren Melinda Fink (Wayne), Jaclynn Dunn (Bill), James Dunn, Natalie Swedlo (Andy), Colin and Tyler Greenfield, Charlie and Liam Dunn. She was adored by her great grandchildren Addison, Mia, Ava, William, Carter, Abby, and Harper. Fueled by her passion for music, she became a determined performer and a gifted teacher, one of the first Suzuki method teachers in North America and a driving force behind the Richmond Hill Symphony, now the York Symphony Orchestra, creatively instilling and nurturing a love of music in hundreds of students of all ages. Edith continued to teach well into her 80’s, shepherding her students in countless performances at the Lions and Kiwanis Music Festivals and in schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. Strong willed to the last, Edith lived her life with good humour and optimism. Edith’s last years were made more comfortable under the care and friendship of the wonderful staff and residents at the Newmarket Health Centre, where her positive attitude and her musical contributions will be missed. Visitation is at Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main Street, Newmarket on Wednesday, August 30th from 2 to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. Funeral will be at Trinity United Church, 461 Park Avenue, Newmarket on Thursday, August 31st at 11 am, followed by a reception at the Church.
